After training as a structural geologist by completing MSc and PhD, field based dissertations, Paul spent the first 7 years of his industry career working for gold mining firms, progressing from Senior Geologist to General Manager for the Peruvian subsidiary of a gold major. In the subsequent 15 years he followed a technically-focussed career path, progressing to the position of Principal Geologist with a mid-cap copper producer. By integrating a strong research background and extensive industry experience he has developed the ability to design and execute structural geology studies that promote efficient and effective optimisation of mining and exploration projects. Paul undertakes geological mapping and structural data-collection on surface, in open-pits and in underground operations. He is accomplished at orientated diamond drill-core structural studies using either core protractors (full-core) or a rocket launcher (typically used for half-core).
By combining his fieldwork data-collection abilities with advanced 3D geological modelling skills Paul can convert geoscientific data (drilling, mapping, geophysics, geochemistry) into 3D lithostratigraphic and structural models. He has extensive experience in using these models to inform and develop ore-body solids suitable for Resource estimation to high standards. These exercises often identify near-mine exploration targets and Paul has expertise in designing and managing drilling programs (surface/underground, conventional/controlled/directional) to evaluate these targets.
Paul has undertaken numerous regional geological interpretations using integrated remote sensing, geological mapping, drilling data, geochemistry and geophysics (aeromagnetics, gravity, seismic, AEM). He has considerable experience in combining mine/prospect scale structural controls on mineralisation with the regional structural framework to determine regional controls on both syngenetic and epigenetic mineralisation styles. These products allow high-quality exploration targeting from belt- to tenement-scale.
During the course of his career, Paul has undertaken business development and project evaluation activities (both mining and exploration) on 6 continents. For gold (all deposit types) and copper (VMS, SSC and orogenic deposit types) he has sufficient experience in exploration, project development and mining to provide expert input for project assessments.
Economic evaluations of mineral deposits, from scoping through to bankable feasibility, require geologists to identify and communicate the impact of geological characteristics on parallel studies being undertaken by other work groups (geotechnical, mining, geohydrology, mineral processing, metallurgy, environmental). As a structural geologist with experience in economic studies at all levels, Paul can assist in ensuring that geological inputs to these studies are robust and complete.
Whilst undertaking the studies to progress the geological understanding of projects is critical, Paul is passionate about communicating the outcomes to client geology teams and enabling them to continue the work independently. Paul has lectured geology students at 3rd Year University level, developed and presented applied structural geology short-courses for mining companies and successfully mentored and trained both industry and research geoscientists through his career.
